Fairbanks City Guide

Fairbanks is located in the heart of Alaska. Nestled between the Chena and Tanana rivers, the city boasts close to 100,000 residents in its metropolitan borders. It's the largest Alaskan city behind Anchorage, and has a variety of sights to visit. Visitors come to Fairbanks for its close proximity to the Denali National forest, a variety of attractions, and for the history of an old mining town.

Fairbanks is called the "Golden Heart of Alaska" due to its central location, but also for the community it fosters. The Northern Lights can be seen many times throughout the year in Fairbanks. From August to April, the Northern Lights have the most frequency in the night sky. The bold colors can be seen at other times of year, but the spring and summer months make for the best time frame. If you stay four to five days in Fairbanks, you will likely encounter the Northern Lights on at least one evening.

The city has temperatures drop drastically in the arctic climate. In the winter, visitors can take in live shows at the many art and theater establishments in the city. Fairbanks is also called home by a world renowned symphony orchestra. The community of Fairbanks makes the most of their summer time, enjoying gardening, live shows, and outdoor festivals. The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festivals brings together the works of authors, painters, potters, photographers, and others to showcase their work for all to see.

In additional to normal hotel stays, visitors can also experience a bit of old country hospitality in one of the city's bed and breakfast establishments. Travelers can also rent lodges and cabins for the scenic views they offer as well as the easy access to the vast wilderness that surrounds Fairbanks. The White Mountains National Recreation Area sits north of Fairbanks and offers visitors hiking trails, wildlife, and access to a rushing river. Those who wish to make the trek south to Denali can do so by train, enjoying the scenery on the short trip to one of the US's most endearing preserves.
